Who is eligible for an online appraisal?

Anybody who does NOT need an appraisal document for a legal purpose. (insurance, probate, tax deductions, etc.). If you are simply curious about the value of your belongings, or if you are contemplating a purchase or sale, this service is perfect for you! This offers the opportunity to explore the value of your item(s) without paying the more costly fees associated with the preparation of a legal document.

Why can't I use an online appraisal for insurance or tax purposes?

Insurance companies, court systems and the Internal Revenue Service have strict guidelines regarding the preparation of appraisal reports for legal purposes. In such instances, it is typically required that your item be evaluated in person by a certified individual. Additionally, extensive market research must be completetd and documented in a legal workfile which is retained by the appraiser. The additional time required to properly examine, document, complete market research, and prepare a workfile and appraisal report make this service more costly than a casual online appraisal. The goal of online appraisal services is to enable individuals with no legal requirement for a formal document to avoid paying the costs typically associated with a formal appraisal. Appraisals for legal purposes can cost hundreds of dollars for a single item.

What types of items can be appraised online?

Many items can be evaluated, including paintings, works on paper, furniture, ceramics, silver, and collectibles. Certain items, such as some glass objects are difficult to appraise via photographs. If you submit a request for an item that cannot clearly be seen, your money will be refunded in full. Jewelry, coins, and musical instruments CANNOT be appraised online.

How long does it take to receive the results of my online appraisal?

In most cases, a you will receive your online report (via e-mail) within 3 business days. In times of great demand, the time frame could be slightly longer.

What if I am not sure what kind of appraisal I need ? (For instance: You have inherited a painting that, if worth $2,000 or more, you would like to insure. However, you cannot know if you need an insurance appraisal or not until you have it assessed.)

If you are uncertain, feel free to proceed with an online appraisal process. If your item is determined to be of a value that would necessitate an insurance replacement appraisal, the money you have spent on the online appraisal will be credited and applied to the cost of your formal appraisal service. Fees paid for online appraisals will be credited toward the cost of a legal appraisal for ONE YEAR, on appraisals of THE IDENTICAL ITEM.
